Nineteenth-Century Classicisms in the Visual Arts

In nineteenth-century Europe, the old quarrel of the ancients and moderns fostered diametrics that left some critics to question the relevance of the classical past in the Age of Steam.  How are emerging "modern" forms of visual art bound to the "ancients? How do artists employ, challenge and create classicizing idioms of the Greco-Roman past?  Join Meg Galindo for a discussion of these querstions and select works from the collection of the Kemper Art Museum that will be exhibited for a special viewing. Students will be encouraged to delineate threads of continuity and disruption across artists and media.

You are welcome to join us any time between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.

During construction, the museum is accessible via Forsyth or Skinker Blvds.
