Lyceum Event: Text & Traditions Student Event

Visit the Kemper Art Museum and tour the exhibition Colonizing the Past: Constructing Race in Ancient Greece and Rome with Professor Wilson

Please join us for an upcoming event in the Text and Traditions Lyceum, a series of meetings and outings designed to complement the T&T class(es) you are taking that is hosted by Dr. Philip Purchase and the IPH Program.

On Thursday, October 28 (4:00-5:00 p.m.), we will visit the Kemper Art Museum and tour the Teaching Gallery Exhibition, Colonizing the Past: Constructing Race in Ancient Greece and Rome. Details are available here.

Dr. Kathryn Wilson, senior lecturer in Classics, who curated the exhibition, has kindly agreed to lead us through the gallery.  The exhibit explores the topic: What does the ancient world have to do with modern constructions of race? Many of the structural factors that shape the role of race today—particularly the histories of the transatlantic slave trade, settler colonialism, and globalization—are unique to the modern period, and scholars still debate whether and how the social and intellectual currents of the premodern past contributed to current racial systems.

We will meet at the Kemper entrance at 4 PM, and we will begin the tour a few minutes after the hour.

The number of participants will be limited to 10.  RSVP to reserve a place by Wednesday, October 27.
