When the faculty who founded IPH banded together to plan the ideal major for ambitious interdisciplinary intellectuals, we turned to Professor Doug Dowd of the Communication Design program in the WU Sam Fox School of Art to help us give a visual explanation of what we were about.  He said that he wanted to give the Humanities, not a face, but faces -- an indication that our concerns span cultures, places, times, and styles.
