Program Requirements: Summary

  1. Introduction Text & Tradition or FOCUS programs in the humanities are the entry points to a major in the Interdisciplinary Project in the Humanities. T&T students will take five core courses. FOCUS students will take three T&T core courses. In both cases, at least one of these courses must focus on the pre-modern period.
  2. Language Students are required to develop advanced competency in a foreign language, as demonstrated by enrollment in at least one 400-level Textual & Historical Studies course in the foreign language of their choice.
  3. Research I In the sophomore year, students will develop a specialty and undertake an independent research project under the mentorship of an appropriate faculty member.
  4. Specialization In the sophomore year, under the guidance of their IPH adviser, students will plan to complete a four-course cluster of courses related to their area of research interest. This cluster must be completed by the fall semester of their senior year. Up to two of these courses may be taken abroad.
  5. Preparing for Senior Year In the spring of their junior year, students will enroll in the team-taught Junior Colloquium and the group Thesis Development Workshop.
  6. Seeking Honors In the spring of the junior year, students seeking honors will take the Junior Comprehensive Exam – both written and oral.
  7. Senior Year In the senior year, students will take the Theory and Methods seminar as well as the Capstone Colloquium. In addition, they will write and defend a capstone thesis under the mentorship of a member of the IPH faculty.
