Europeans in Polynesia/Polynesians in Europe: Discovering Eros in the South Pacific

Anthony Pagden, UCLA Professor of Political Science and History is the 2013 Humanities Lecture Series speaker.  On Wednesday, February 6, at 12noon, in the Women's Building, Formal Lounge, he will speak on "Europeans in Polynesia/Polynesians in Europe: Discovering Eros in the South Pacific"  On Thursday, February 7, 12noon, also in the Women's Building, Formal Lounge, he will speak on "Three Modes of Modernity: Patriotism, Nationalism, Cosmopolitanism."

Professor Pagden's research interests include the political, social and legal theory of empires and imperialism from antiquity to the present; the "encounter" between Europeans and "others" in the Americas and the Pacific; the sources of the conflict between the "West" and "East"; cosmopolitanism and Enlightenment.
